The Truth About Wearing Clothes For Yoga Practice – A Myth Or A Necessity?

Table of Contents

Yoga has become one of the most favourable exercises for people across the world, and with so many variations, who wouldn’t want to do it? If you have a dog you want to spend time with – there’s doga.

And if you want to relax and unwind after a full day, there are literally some poses in yoga where you can just lie on the floor and breathe. It definitely sounds like my kind of exercise!

A lot of people seem to think that special yoga clothing is required for you to practice yoga. But is there truth to this and what are the pros and cons of both sides?

Feeling Comfortable

The most important thing about yoga is how you feel.

After all, yoga is as much about your mental state as it is about the physical. And feeling comfortable is the first step to a good yoga session, whether you are doing it at home in your bedroom or in a class with ten other people.

Some people feel better when they are covered up in baggy clothes, keeping their bodies to themselves.

Others, however, feel more freedom and less restricted when they are as close to naked as possible – leading to the movement of naked yoga.

But, of course, there is everything in between, from working out in a sports bra and shorts to being completely covered in skin-tight clothing.

Seeing Your Lines

If you are practicing yoga because you want to tone your body and actually get good at it, it’s extremely important that you see how your muscles are moving, what position your body and your joints are in, and it’s hard to do that if you are in baggy clothing. You might think that being naked is perfect for this, but actually, if you have any skin that is not completely flush to your muscles it might be hard to see this. However, if you are in suitable compression clothing, you will be able to see all of your lines beautifully. This is especially important if you are teaching yoga to someone else, because they need to be able to see the exact position of your body.

Being At Peace With Yourself

There is something very intimate and special about doing yoga without any clothing on. You are celebrating your body and accepting it. In fact, doing this has helped a lot of people accept their bodies, as they get to know them. In reality, we don’t spend nearly as much time with our bodies as we think we do, and this can often create false images, because we only see our mental images of our bodies. But when you do yoga naked, you will get a better understanding of your own body and see it in a more beautiful light. Of course, most people don’t feel comfortable doing this in front of strangers in a class, but doing it when you’re by yourself at home can be very beneficial.

Motivate Yourself

If you’ve signed up for a yoga class, but every time you go, you are thinking about how everyone else is showing up in their perfect yogi pants, mats in one hand and fresh fruit-infused water, while you are there in an old T-shirt and washed out shorts – you can feel like you don’t belong and lose the motivation to show up for class. Looking and feeling good in the clothes you exercise in is one of the best ways to get motivated to exercise, and this is no exception. There’s no need to spend a fortune on a whole wardrobe of workout clothes, but having one or two sets that you can grab and go being sure that they fit well and are comfortable can make all the difference.

At the end of the day, whether yoga clothes are for you depends mostly on the reason why you are practicing. If you want to just do yoga at home to get some peace of mind and some stretching, then you can do it practically naked. However, if you want to do yoga regularly, get good at it and make sure you are doing it right, you are going to need some gear to help you out along the way. So while it’s perfectly possible to practice yoga without proper clothing, one thing’s for sure: having a set or two definitely won’t hurt.
