Yoga Stars Interview With: Alexa D’Orazio

YOGA STARS is part of a feature campaign hosted by Vibrant Yogini where an experienced yoga teacher or enthusiast was interviewed about their beautiful journey learning yoga, as well as their newfound views as a yoga practitioner.

It was created to try and remove the gap between confident and expert yogi’s, and those who have just started to practice yoga or who are curious to learn more about it.

The truth is, and especially as an experienced yoga teacher myself, we never want you to feel intimidated or discouraged to start learning yoga.

Therefore, it is important to remember that each and every yoga teacher started fresh from the beginning as a newbie once upon a time.

So take a read of the yoga interviews and learn more about the experience of each participant as they share their story. The main aim of this campaign is to motivate you to continue your journey no matter where you are on it.

Designed to inspire your yoga practice and encourage you to follow your dreams.

Leading the spotlight for the second Yoga Stars feature is the extremely talented Alexa D’Orazio, also known as @YogaByAlexa on instagram! Take a little peek at her breathtakingly beautiful photos on her feed. It will certainly add a gentle touch of inspiration for your weekend!

“Exercise of all sorts has been a source of fun, learning, and growing ever since I stepped into the fitness space. Join me and we’ll rock this life we’ve got with a great attitude while feeling good.” – Alexa D’Orazio

Yoga Star: Alexa D’Orazio

Where are you currently based?

San Diego.

Where are you originally from?

Vancouver, Canada.

When did you start practicing yoga and why?

I started practicing a long time ago – when I was still a kid in 2005.

I never had a regular practice though until 2011.

My original reason for practicing yoga was because I thought it was fun, and I still do!

But why I practice has definitely evolved.

I do yoga asana and meditation now for the peace and clarity it brings me.

It’s the time on my mat where I can think in quietness is why I keep returning to my practice.

What got you hooked?

As vain as it is to say, I love seeing my progress.

I don’t just mean in my physical asana practice.

I have watched and experienced myself grow and progress in mind and soul as well, and that’s just something I can never give up.

What is your favourite asana and why?

Savasana with blocks under my knees!

I just get to relax and let myself sink into whatever kind of meditation I need.

Where did you do your training/s and what courses have you completed?

I have done a lot of trainings.

My original Segway into the yoga world was actually through a group fitness instruction certified by AFAA.

I still hold that today.

Then I did my yoga teacher training through Yoga Six.

After that, I continued to expand my knowledge by taking:

  • Yochi mini certification,
  • Flow Lift certification by Buddhi Yoga,
  • and a few others that have to do with safety when teaching.

I was also lucky enough to take some anatomy classes in college which really helped to shape how I teach as an instructor.

How has yoga impacted your life?

It has made me more mindful and open to ‘the other side’ – whether that is an argument, an opposing political view, whatever!

Which type of yoga do you teach/ specialize in?

Vinyasa.

What do you enjoy about this particular style of yoga?

I love it because it gives the freedom to flow as fast or slow as I’d like with very few ‘style’ restrictions.

What’s your mission as a yoga instructor?

I want everyone to practice safe yoga.

I’m just beginning my journey to spread the word, but that is something I’m super passionate about.

Safe in body, mind, and soul.

If you could give only one piece of advice to others who are looking to start yoga what would it be?

Just do it!

You don’t even need a mat.

Just sit down or lay down and start breathing.

When you’re ready, add any movement that feels good.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone who is just starting out as a teacher what would it be?

Be yourself.

It is easy to want to emulate someone you look up to – I’ve done it.

But students will love you and learn from you for who you are.

What is one of your favorite mantras or affirmations that you don’t mind sharing?

I am wonderful. I am strong. I am capable of infinite abilities.

What is one of your favorite yoga quotes?

I don’t have one… I like them all! But anything Rachel Brathen says is pretty great 🙂

If you could have a secret power, what would in be?

To retain everything I learn – I’m very forgetful!
