YOGA STARS is a weekly feature at Vibrant Yogini where an amazing yoga teacher or enthusiast is interviewed about their beautiful journey and views as a yogi! It has been created to try and remove the gap between our confident and expert yogi’s, and those who have just started to practice yoga or who are curious to learn more about it. We never want you to feel intimidated or discouraged. Therefore, it is important to remember that each and every yogi started fresh from the beginning as a newbie once upon a time! Our aim is to motivate you to continue your journey no matter where you are on it.

Designed to inspire your yoga practice and encourage you to follow your dreams.

This week’s Yoga Stars feature is hosted by Veronica Brown! Check out her beautifully inspiring instagram feed: @YogicByNature

Yoga Star: Veronica Brown aka @YogicByNature

When did you start practicing yoga and why?

I was introduced to yoga while expecting my second child.

Back then I was into kickboxing but I had to stop because of severe morning sickness.

So a friend suggested I tried yoga instead.

I wasn’t too sure but she eventually persuaded me.

I was instantly hooked.

What got you hooked?

After the very first class I did realize that I was not only engaging on a physical level, but on a spiritual one  too.

Yoga worked on my soul as much as it did on my body; that for me was a true revelation, I had never experienced anything similar before.

What is your favourite asana and why?

I do have a few favorites, but if I have to chose one I’d say either frog or compass pose, because I love stretching my hips and working on the flexibility of my legs the most.

Where did you do your training/s and what courses have you completed?

I belong to the YYI institute which is a branch of  the B.K.S Iyengar School here in South Africa.

I’m currently working on earning my last badge.

How has yoga impacted your life?

Yoga has impacted my life immensely.

It’s teaching me patience and compassion and that it’s all about the journey, not the destination.

Even as a teacher, you remain a student for life.

Which type of yoga do you teach/ specialize in?

But to be honest I have developed my own style and I like to get creative and think out of the box when I teach my own classes.

I like diversity and variety so I tend to put together different yoga flows all the time.

What do you love about this style of yoga?

Iyenga yoga taught me structure and discipline, two things I’m not that good at; I’ve learnt to value the attention to details, to correct and assist in the right way.

If you could give only one piece of advice to others who are looking to start yoga what would it be?

Do it!

Don’t hesitate.

It will change your life.

Keep an open heart and bring your uniqueness into your practice.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone who is just starting out as a teacher what would it be?

Don’t be too hard on yourself and keep your own practice interesting and stimulating.

A motivated teacher is a good teacher.

What is one of your favorite mantras or affirmations that you don’t mind sharing?

I am strong.

I am beautiful.

I am enough.

What is one of your favorite yoga quotes?

“Yoga is the perfect opportunity to be curious about who you are”

by Jason Crandell

If you could have a secret power, what would in be?

I’d totally love to be able to read people’s mind!

  • Almost there, but first let’s find you the correct gear to take with you…

When packing to go on a wellness holiday, it is useful to take your own personal travel mat and gear.

Finding the correct equipment that fully suits your needs is important to prevent injuries and help you reap the benefits of yoga and exercise.

When I first started yoga, I personally had to have a slightly thicker yoga mat than average otherwise the lower part of my back doesn’t feel cushioned enough making me feel so sore after only one or two sessions!

Barefoot yoga supplied a wide variety of sustainable and comfortable yoga props and gear.

Browse their collection here.

  • Are you getting enough vitamins during your travels? or even, at home?

Sometimes when we go travelling, we can be limited to what food is available at the destinations we travel to.

This often makes us feel sluggish and tired.

You can overcome the common negative effects of travelling with yoga stretches. Read the guide here.

Plus, you can supplement stretches with nutritional vitamins.

Us health-conscious yogi’s usually travel with organic supplements to help keep us healthy while on the road -the last thing we ever want while on vacation is to become sick!

Well that’s all for now! Make sure you keep an eye out for the Yoga Star featuring at Vibrant Yogini next Friday!
