YOGA STARS is a new weekly feature at Vibrant Yogini where an amazing yoga teacher or enthusiast will be interviewed about their beautiful journey and views as a yogi! It has been created to try and remove the gap between our confident and expert yogi’s, and those who have just started to practice yoga or who are curious to learn more about it. We never want you to feel intimidated or discouraged. Therefore, it is important to remember that each and every yogi started fresh from the beginning as a newbie once upon a time! Our aim is to motivate you to continue your journey no matter where you are on it.
Designed to inspire your yoga practice and encourage you to follow your dreams.
“Nina is a self-confessed anatomy geek, but likes bending the rules and challenge yoga dogma. Her approach to asana is based on bio-mechanic intelligence and she is known for her ability to break down handstands and arm balances, teaching students anatomically correct body engagement. Nina works from the principle that asana is a union of strength, flexibility, balance and breath, but also thinks it imperative to inject playfulness and fun into her practice and teaching.” ~ Nina
Yoga Star: Nina Jarnum
Where are you currently based?
Where are you originally from?
When did you start practicing yoga and why?
I started practicing 15 years ago whilst living in England.
I had been a competitive horse rider for years and my body was suffering.
I started yoga for mobility and flexibility.
What got you hooked?
I walked out of my first yoga class and for the first time i a very long time I felt truly calm and relaxed – I was hooked immediately!
What is your favourite asana and why?
It really depends on the day.
Whatever my body needs is my favourite.
Of course handstands and arm balances have always been an area of fascination and exploration with me.
I love feeling strong!
Where did you do your training/s and what courses have you completed?
My first YTT was Hatha with Shane Davies here in California.
I am also SmartFlow certified with Annie Carpenter and continue t0 do yearly trainings with her.
On top of that I like to train with Dylan Werner whenever we happen to be on the same continent at the same time, and I attend weekend courses and workshops whenever possible, not just with yoga teachers but also general movement specialists, shoulder surgeons etc – basically whatever I feel will expend my knowledge.
As a yoga teacher, I think it imperative to keep learning and I try to do a minimum of 100 hours of training every year.
How has yoga impacted your life?
Apart from the obvious change of career path, it has had a profound impact on my fundamental personality; I used to be a very negative and impatient person, and although i’m still sarcastic and occasionally bitchy hahaha… I am generally a very positive and happy person now.
I am so much more able to look after myself and my actions objectively, and recognise my weaknesses.
Which type of yoga do you teach/ specialize in?
I teach a slow flowing, but very strong vinyasa.
I focus on balance and mobility and finding presence in the movements in between.
What do you enjoy about this particular style of yoga?
I love how it develops body intelligence and awareness, and builds mobility and flexibility through strength.

“My teaching is all about personal empowerment, developing body intelligence and creating awe, amazement and gratefulness for your own body and its capabilities. I want to give my students strong safe practices, which includes them understanding and respecting their unique body. I work from the concept that we are all our own guru: my job as a teacher is to introduce you to your own power.” – Nina

Yoga and wellness retreats around the world;
Why not spend your next vacation experiencing a yoga retreat?
There are so many to choose from!
Whether you prefer mixing it with a bit of surfing in Costa Rica, or your would like to visit the worlds heart of yoga in Rishikish, India.
Perhaps you are in need of a refreshing detox retreat, or simply a relaxing and luxurious stay in paradise which offers you spa treatments, sightseeing tours and daily yoga classes.
You are sure to find one that suits your needs perfectly!
When packing to go on a wellness holiday, it is useful to take your own personal travel mat and gear.
Finding the correct equipment that fully suits your needs is important to prevent injuries and help you reap the benefits of yoga and exercise.
When I first started yoga, I personally had to have a slightly thicker yoga mat than average otherwise the lower part of my back doesn’t feel cushioned enough making me feel so sore after only one or two sessions!
Barefoot yoga supplied a wide variety of sustainable and comfortable yoga props and gear.
Sometimes when we go travelling, we can be limited to what food is available at the destinations we travel to.
This often makes us feel sluggish and tired.
You can overcome the common negative effects of travelling with yoga stretches. Read the guide here.
Plus, you can supplement stretches with nutritional vitamins.
Us health-conscious yogi’s usually travel with organic supplements to help keep us healthy while on the road -the last thing we ever want while on vacation is to become sick!
Well that’s all for now! Make sure you keep an eye out for the Yoga Star featuring at Vibrant Yogini next Friday!
